The South African Benchrest Shooting Federation is the national home for benchrest rifle shooting — the pursuit of the smallest possible group, fired from the steadiest possible rest, at the furthest reasonable range. We govern the sport, sanction its matches, and keep its record book.
What is benchrest shooting?
Benchrest removes every variable but one: the rifle, the ammunition, and the conditions. Shooters fire from a fixed rest, unsupported by the human hand, so that what is measured on the target is the true mechanical accuracy of rifle and cartridge — not the shooter's hold. Groups are measured in fractions of an inch, and the discipline that produced the 6mm PPC, still the benchmark short-range cartridge more than four decades on, still guides how our members chamber, load, and tune.
Matches are shot at 100m, 200m, and increasingly at 300m and beyond, in Light Varmint, Heavy Varmint, Sporter, and Unlimited classes recognised by our member clubs and by the international benchrest bodies we correspond with.
